10 Story Starters to Spark Your Child's Imagination
Every great book starts with an idea โ but sometimes that first idea is the hardest part. Whether your child is writing their very first story or their tenth, a good prompt can unlock a whole world of creativity.
Here are 10 story starters that young authors on Booklings have used to create amazing books:
1. The Secret Door
"One day, I found a tiny door behind my bookshelf that I'd never noticed before. When I opened it..."
This classic prompt works for every age. Younger kids might find a candy world; older writers might discover a parallel universe with its own rules and dangers.
2. The Talking Animal
"I was walking to school when a squirrel looked right at me and said, 'You're late.'"
What if animals could talk, but only to you? This prompt naturally creates humor and adventure. What does the animal need help with? Why can only your character hear them?
3. The Mysterious Map
"Inside the old library book, I found a hand-drawn map. The X was marked right where my school playground is."
Treasure hunts are irresistible. The map could lead anywhere โ buried treasure, a time capsule, or something nobody was ever supposed to find.
4. The Wish Gone Wrong
"I wished I could fly. I got my wish โ but I forgot to wish for a way to land."
Stories about wishes that don't work out the way you expected are funny and teach great lessons about being careful what you wish for.
5. The New Kid Has a Secret
"The new student in our class seemed normal โ until I saw what was inside their backpack."
Mystery and intrigue! What's in the backpack? A dragon egg? A shrinking machine? A book that writes the future?
6. Stuck in a Video Game
"I picked up the controller and the screen flashed white. When I could see again, I was standing INSIDE the game."
Perfect for kids who love gaming. They know the rules of game worlds โ lives, levels, power-ups โ and can build amazing adventures with them.
7. The Time Machine in the Garage
"My grandpa always said his old car was special. Turns out he meant REALLY special."
Time travel stories let kids explore history, meet famous people, or see the future. Where (and when) would your character go first?
8. The Last Day of Summer
"It was the last day of summer vacation, and I was determined to make it the most epic day ever."
This works great as a realistic fiction prompt. No magic needed โ just a kid trying to pack as much fun and adventure into one perfect day.
9. The Robot Best Friend
"For my birthday, I got a robot. The instructions said it would do whatever I asked. They didn't mention it would also have opinions."
A robot with personality is a fantastic character to write. What happens when your helpful robot starts disagreeing with you?
10. The Storm That Changed Everything
"The biggest storm anyone had ever seen hit our town on Tuesday. When it was over, three things were different."
This prompt gives structure (three changes) while leaving room for wild creativity. The changes could be magical, emotional, or physical.
